Originally developed in 2016, UL 9540 is a safety standard for Energy Storage Systems (ESS) and equipment, that are intended to receive and store energy. ESS requirements and regulations ensure that safety, efficiency, and quality standards are met, promoting responsible practices and minimizing thermal runaway.
Energy storage types covered under the current edition of the UL 9540 standard* include:
Due to the number of regional considerations and nuances to the regulation, it can be confusing as to what the UL 9540 requirements are and why they are important.
Let’s dive into what the UL 9540 ESS requirements are and how Mitsubishi Electric can help you through the process.
UL 9540 is a safety system listing for energy storage systems. UL 9540 evaluates the compatibility and safety of the various components that make up an ESS but integrated as a system.
According to the current edition of UL 9540*:
“ The energy storage system shall be constructed either as one unitary complete piece of equipment or as matched assemblies that, when connected, form the system. Individual parts or pieces of equipment within an energy storage system are not considered an energy storage system on their own. ”
A common misconception is that UL 9540 only applies to lithium-ion UPS systems. It is important to note that it can be imposed on a variety of UPS, ESS, battery types and designs.
For more detailed information on UL 9540:
A UL 9540-listed system can be a variety of different designs.
Typically, there is an energy storage device such as a battery, capacitor, or electro-mechanical piece of equipment. Then, to provide that stored energy, a converter of some sort converts the stored energy to the proper voltage and power levels that are appropriate for the application.
Examples of UL 9540 systems could be:
The various component configurations and designs are integrated as a system and need to be evaluated and tested for UL 9540 compliance. This includes varying numbers of battery cabinets or other energy storage components.
In recent years, installation codes and standards have been updated to address modern energy storage applications which often use new ESS technologies. The most prescriptive safety codes and guidelines in the UPS industry are:
UL 9540 is tied to many different installations and fire safety codes, not just the three listed above. Other local, state, regional, and international building and fire codes may also apply.
You should always check with your local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) regarding what codes and standards are required for your site.
Some important considerations within UL 9540 and NFPA 855 codes include, but not limited to:
In the example below, a UL 9540-listed system allows the UPS and battery cabinets to be side-by-side, creating a footprint advantage over systems without a UL 9540 listing, if a site requires NFPA 855 and IFC regulations.
Mitsubishi Electric offers UL 9540-listed configurations of the 1100B (10-80kVA), 9900AEGIS (80-225kVA), and 9900D (1200-2000kVA) UPS systems with Samsung lithium-ion batteries.
The UL 9540 listing and labeling process is very complex, and there are a variety of ways our team can assist customers with meeting UL 9540 ESS requirements.
For example, a full listing and label can only be officially applied and formally executed on a system that is connected and integrated with the UPS and batteries together. The system manufacturing or assembly site then becomes the location in which the system is installed.
This means the final installation location is where the UL testing needs to be done. This location could be at the integrator for a containerized solution or at the end customer’s site.
Mitsubishi Electric will:
During the above process, there are a lot of different parties that need to interact and communicate for the project to be successfully executed. The below diagram depicts the high-level communication flow.
Following UL 9540 requirements can seem like a daunting process, but our team is here to help! Contact us with any questions or upcoming projects.
