Where are you from?
“Yuma, AZ. That is where I spent most of my time growing up.”
How did you start working in the critical power industry and at Mitsubishi Electric? What drew you to this role?
“I was retiring from the Navy and was looking to do something in electronics, but I did not want to be a contractor.
The idea of doing something new and different from what I did while working in the Navy was exciting - the challenge of learning something new after having done the same basic job for 20 years is what peaked my excitement the most."
What do you like about working in critical power?
“I really like the ability to work on my own a little bit – have the support network as needed (if I have questions, I call somebody) – but be able to show up, do the job, and go home.
It’s a complete 180 from what I was doing in the Navy, and it's cool to see how the other side of the coin works."
What do you like about working at Mitsubishi Electric? What sets our Field Service Team apart from others?
“The people I work with are the best part about working at MEPPI. I am still new and when I have questions, there is always someone who takes the time to explain and answer my questions, ensuring I understand and can respond to customer questions about our UPS."
How has the training process been so far?
"Training has been exceptional. It’s definitely a healthy mix of all the different types of training.
The computer-based training (the easier stuff); I like the ‘hey, we have something we need to teach you and we need to fly you to Warrendale so you can learn it and do what you need to do.
You can sit down in a classroom - in a safe environment - get it done; and then there’s also the on-the-job training, and the technicians that have been out in the field have just been extremely knowledgeable.
Anytime there’s a question that comes up, its easy to ask them, they show you what needs to be done – or I can make a phone call, put something in the TEAMS chat – and somebody gets the answer.
They talk me through it and guide me through what it is so we can get the answer. And not just have the answer – understand how we got to the answer.
Definitely what I found is being able to explain it to whoever is [on site] who doesn’t do critical power, being able to explain it in a way that they can understand has helped while I’ve been at this site.
I do look forward to learning more about our systems including more troubleshooting and maintenance."
What is something people should know when looking for the ideal UPS?
“These are important investments. Make them count by purchasing the best one so you will not have any regrets about it in the future.
Look at [the unit] from the quality control standpoint but also talk to other customers who may have purchased similar types of UPS – and those manufactured by a different company and kind of see where they’re going.
Just the limited time I’ve been here it seems like Mitsubishi [Electric] has the more robust units. We have made a good name for ourselves in the industry."
What advice would you give to a Facility Manager?
“Buy the bigger UPS. You never know what requirements may come - it is always better to have more UPS than to replace it because your needs have outgrown it.”
What is the best advice you have received, personally or professionally?
“You will never get the years back with your kids: spend the time with them. There is always time to make money, but no amount of money will make time."
What is something you are passionate about outside of work?
“My family."
What is your favorite place that you've traveled to and why?
"Rome, Italy. I love history, and getting to spend time in a city filled with monuments that are older than our country was mind boggling. One stop on my tour was to an active archaeological excavation.
The archaeologist took us down a set of makeshift stairs dug out from the site that had date ranges next to each step - it was like we were stepping back in time."
What is a new skill or hobby you’d like to learn?
"Something I would really like to get into now that I am retired from the Navy is fishing. I never was able to do much fishing while growing up in the desert or traveling around in the Navy."
